BIOGRAPHY

Maverick came up through the highly competitive Spanish CEV championships, finishing runner up in 2009 and winning the title in 2010. Viñales moved to the 125cc world championship at the age of 16 and immediately made an impression, earning four wins in his debut season to finish third in the final standings. Maverick finished third again in 2012, scoring five more wins to finish third overall in the new four-stroke Moto3 class, before finally scooping the title in 2013.

A solitary season in Moto2 saw four more Grand Prix wins and another championship bronze medal, which earned a move to the premier MotoGP class at the age of 20 years old. Maverick’s class shone through, winning 2015’s Rookie of the Year and finishing 12th overall on a still developing bike. The big breakthrough came in 2016 when Maverick stood atop the podium with a dominant display at Silverstone’s British Grand Prix, with three further top three finishes, Viñales ended the season fourth in the championship.

The Spaniard’s performances also earned a coveted call up to reigning team champions Movistar Yamaha MotoGP, where he will race alongside the legendary Valentino Rossi.
